Why Kauhale?

Why Kauhale?

In ancient Hawaiʻi, the kauhale was a cluster of houses and structures – each serving different functions but used collectively to support a small community. Communal living was central to ancient Hawaiian society. The various types of structures found within a kauhale included:

1. Hale Mua: The men's house, where males gathered, cooked, and ate. It was also a place for religious ceremonies.
2. Hale ʻAina: The women's eating house, where women and children ate and performed household activities.
3. Hale Noa: The sleeping house, used by both men and women, typically after religious restrictions in the Hale Mua were lifted.
4. Hale Kuku: The house for making kapa (bark cloth).
5. Hale Ulana: The house for weaving.
6. Hale Papaʻa: The storage house for valuables and food.
7. Hale Imu: The earth oven house, where food was cooked in underground ovens.

It is from this traditional Hawaiian mindset that Kauhale Foundation finds its core and seeks to serve as the kauhale for the Native Hawaiian community.
